I Let AI Trade on Polymarket While I Sleep

I Let AI Trade on Polymarket While I Sleep#

Quick honesty check before the clickbait police show up: this is paper trading. No real money changes hands.

Everything else in the title holds up. An agent scans Polymarket every 15 minutes, trades against $10,000 in fake capital, and posts a full report to my Discord before I finish my coffee. Overnight moves, overreactions, mispricings β€” it catches what I'd sleep straight through.

If you've ever lost money on a prediction market because you tested a strategy with real cash before you understood the market's behavior, this one's for you.

Why manual trading on Polymarket is a losing setup#

Prediction markets don't keep business hours. News drops at 2 AM, probabilities swing 15 points in minutes, and by the time you check your phone, the trade is gone.

Even when you're awake, you're fighting yourself. Emotional entries. Panic exits. And worst of all: no clean record of what actually worked, so you keep repeating the same mistakes with fresh conviction.

The standard fix β€” throwing real money at a half-tested strategy β€” is just paying tuition to the market. Paper trading fixes that, but manual paper trading has the same problem as manual trading: you can't watch everything.

So let an agent do it. It never sleeps, never gets scared, and never talks itself into a bad trade because it "has a feeling about this one."

The autopilot: three strategies, zero emotions#

The agent runs continuously on a 15-minute cron. Each cycle it fetches market data from the Polymarket API β€” prices, volume, spreads β€” and checks every market against three strategies:

  • TAIL (trend-following): buy when a market sits above 60% probability and volume spikes. Momentum, but with confirmation.
  • BONDING (contrarian): buy the overreaction when a market drops more than 10% on news. An agent has no fear and no FOMO, which is exactly the temperament a contrarian needs.
  • SPREAD (arbitrage): fire when YES + NO adds up to more than 1.05. Fair warning: on an efficient market this trigger rarely goes off. When it does, it's the closest thing to free money these markets offer.

Every simulated trade gets logged with entry price, exit price, quantity, and P&L. Every morning at 8 AM, the agent posts to Discord: yesterday's trades, current portfolio value, open positions, win rate per strategy, and its read on the market.

My honest take: the daily Discord report is quietly the best part. Most traders never build a real dataset of their own decisions. This gives you one in a week.

Building it#

You need four pieces:

  • web_search or web_fetch for pulling Polymarket API data
  • postgres or SQLite for trade logs and portfolio tracking
  • Discord integration for the daily reports
  • Cron jobs for continuous monitoring, plus sub-agent spawning for parallel market analysis during high-volume periods

Start with the database. Two tables carry everything:

CREATE TABLE paper_trades (
  id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
  market_id TEXT,
  market_name TEXT,
  strategy TEXT,
  direction TEXT,
  entry_price DECIMAL,
  exit_price DECIMAL,
  quantity DECIMAL,
  pnl DECIMAL,
  timestamp TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT NOW()
);

CREATE TABLE portfolio (
  id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
  total_value DECIMAL,
  cash DECIMAL,
  positions JSONB,
  updated_at TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT NOW()
);

The paper_trades table is your experiment log. The portfolio table tracks fake cash and open positions. Tag a strategy on every trade and you can later answer "which strategy actually makes money?" with a single query.

Next, create a Discord channel β€” mine is #polymarket-autopilot β€” and connect it.

Then give the agent its job. This is close to the prompt I run:

You are a Polymarket paper trading autopilot. Run continuously (via cron every 15 minutes):

1. Fetch current market data from Polymarket API
2. Analyze opportunities using these strategies:
   - TAIL: Follow strong trends (>60% probability + volume spike)
   - BONDING: Contrarian plays on overreactions (sudden drops >10% on news)
   - SPREAD: Arbitrage when YES+NO > 1.05
3. Execute paper trades in the database (starting capital: $10,000)
4. Track portfolio state and update positions

Every morning at 8 AM, post a summary to Discord #polymarket-autopilot:
- Yesterday's trades (entry/exit prices, P&L)
- Current portfolio value and open positions
- Win rate and strategy performance
- Market insights and recommendations

Use sub-agents to analyze multiple markets in parallel during high-volume periods.

Never use real money. This is paper trading only.

Note the last line. It's not decoration β€” bake the guardrail into the prompt itself so there's zero ambiguity about what the agent is allowed to touch.

That's the whole setup. Database, Discord channel, prompt, cron.

Week one is not the point. The record is.#

Don't expect the first week to print fake money. Expect noise.

What you're actually collecting is evidence. After a few weeks you can look at the logs and ask real questions: Does TAIL work better on politics or crypto markets? Is BONDING's 10% drop threshold too loose? Does SPREAD ever fire at all, or should I replace it with something else?

Then iterate. Tighten the TAIL probability threshold. Backtest against historical data. Add a fourth strategy. Adjust, run, compare. Your strategy tuning now happens against a logged dataset instead of vibes and screenshots.

That loop β€” trade, log, review, adjust β€” is the entire edge. The agent handles the first two parts around the clock; you only show up for the parts that require judgment.

Start on paper. Graduate only if you earn it.#

The trap most crypto traders fall into is going live immediately, blowing up, and concluding "bots don't work" when the actual conclusion was "I shipped an untested strategy."

Run the paper version first. Let it log a month of trades. If the numbers hold up across different market conditions, then you can have a conversation about real capital β€” with an audit trail to back it up.

Full docs for the Polymarket API are at docs.polymarket.com, and the whole setup above runs on OpenClaw with standard skills you already know: web fetch, Postgres, Discord, cron.
